What wax melts actually are
A wax melt is simply scented wax without a wick. Instead of burning, it melts slowly in a wax burner - either heated from below by a tea light, or by an electric element - releasing its fragrance as it liquefies. Because there's no combustion involved, the scent release is gentler and more sustained than a candle, and the fragrance tends to fill a larger space.

How much to use
Each snap bar is divided into portions for a reason. One or two pieces is enough for most rooms - a living room or bedroom will be well-served by a single piece in a standard-sized burner. Use more for a larger space, or if you want a stronger scent.
The temptation is to fill the burner dish entirely. Resist it. Overloading the dish doesn't produce a proportionally stronger scent - it just means the wax takes longer to reach temperature and you get through your bar faster than necessary.
Tea light vs electric burners
Both work, but they work differently. Tea light burners heat the wax more intensely, which produces a stronger initial scent throw but burns through the fragrance more quickly. Electric burners heat more gently and consistently, which gives a softer but more sustained scent release over a longer period.
For everyday background fragrance - a home office, a hallway, a bedroom - an electric burner is the better choice. For a stronger, more immediate impact - before guests arrive, for an evening in - a tea light burner gives you that faster hit of scent.
How to know when a melt is spent
This is the question we get asked most often about wax melts, and the answer surprises most people: the wax doesn't disappear. It stays in the burner dish looking exactly the same whether it has fragrance left or not. The only way to tell is by smell - or rather, by the absence of it.
When you warm the wax and can no longer smell anything, the fragrance has been fully released and it's time to change it. The wax itself is still there, still liquid when warm, perfectly harmless - it just has nothing left to give.
How to change the wax
The easiest method is to warm the burner until the wax just liquefies, then pour it into a piece of kitchen paper or an old container and wipe the dish clean before adding fresh wax. Some people use the freezer method - let the wax set completely, then pop the dish in the freezer for a few minutes until the wax contracts and lifts out cleanly.
Whatever method you use, don't pour liquid wax down the sink. It will set in your pipes and cause problems that are significantly more unpleasant than a blocked drain.
Mixing scents
One of the pleasures of wax melts is the ability to blend scents in the burner - something you can't do with candles. A piece of Lychee & Peony alongside a piece of Linen Fresh creates something lighter and more complex than either alone. Blackberry & Bay with a hint of Cashmere & Musk gives a richer, darker result.
There are no rules here. Some combinations work beautifully; some don't. The only way to find out is to experiment - and because each piece is small and inexpensive, the cost of a failed experiment is low.
Storing your melts
Keep unused snap bars away from direct sunlight and heat, which can cause the fragrance to degrade before you've even used them. A cool, dark drawer or cupboard is ideal. Stored correctly, a wax melt snap bar will hold its fragrance for a year or more.
