Every small business has a beginning. Ours smells faintly of failed wax pours and the particular kind of optimism that makes you think, after the third ruined batch, that maybe the fourth one will be different.
It was.
It started with a kit
Three Trees Candle Co began the way a lot of honest things do - not with a business plan or a brand strategy, but with curiosity. A candle-making kit, a kitchen table, and an afternoon that turned into an evening and then a habit and then, slowly, something that felt like it might actually become something.
The early batches were imperfect. The wicks were off-centre. The scents weren't quite balanced. There were candles that tunnelled on the first burn and shapes that refused to release cleanly from their moulds. Anyone who has ever tried to make a sculptural candle from scratch will tell you that the gap between what you picture and what comes out is, initially, humbling.
But each batch taught something. And the ones that worked - really worked, the ones that burned cleanly and smelled exactly right and held their shape - made it obvious that this was worth continuing.
The studio
We're based on the Wirral, and our candles are made in our home studio. Not a factory, not a fulfilment warehouse - a real room, in a real house, where every candle is hand-poured in small batches by us. That's not a marketing line. It's just the truth of how we operate, and it's something we're genuinely proud of.
Small-batch production means we can control quality in a way that scaled manufacturing simply can't. It means we notice when something is slightly off and we fix it before it goes out. It means every candle that leaves here has been made with the kind of attention you can only give when you're not trying to fill a warehouse.
It also means we know exactly what goes into every candle: 100% natural soy wax, vegan-friendly fragrance oils, cotton wicks, and sustainable packaging. No shortcuts, no fillers, nothing we wouldn't be happy to burn in our own home - which, given that our studio is in our house, we do. Constantly.
The three trees
People often ask about the name.
At the bottom of our garden there are three trees that have been here longer than we have. An oak - wide and sprawling, the kind of tree that looks like it has opinions. A pine - tall and straight and quietly majestic in a way that makes you feel calm just looking at it. And a eucalyptus that, on warm days, fills the whole garden with a scent so clean and green and alive that it honestly should be bottled.
They were there at the very beginning, looking on through the window while the first batches were poured and the first disasters were scraped out of moulds. When it came to naming the business, nothing else felt right. The three trees had been witnesses to the whole thing. It seemed only fair to include them.
The sculptural side of things
The scented candles came first. But the sculptural range is where Three Trees found its own voice.
The idea was simple: make candles that were worth keeping even when they weren't burning. Objects that earned their place on a shelf - not because they were expensive, but because they were genuinely interesting to look at. A D20 for the tabletop gamer. A dragon for the person who has everything except a dragon. A pair of houses for someone starting a new chapter. A book for the reader. A ghost, because Halloween deserves better than a tea light in a pumpkin.
Getting the sculptural range right took time. Soy wax is softer than paraffin and more demanding to work with in moulds - it requires patience and a willingness to redo things until they're right. But when a shape comes out cleanly and the details are crisp and the finish has that particular matte quality that only soy gives, it's worth every failed attempt that came before it.
What we care about
From the very beginning, making things sustainably wasn't a selling point - it was just the only way we wanted to do it. Natural soy wax because it's plant-based and burns cleaner than paraffin. Eco-friendly packaging because the alternative felt wasteful. Vegan-friendly ingredients because there's no reason it should be otherwise. Sourcing locally where we can, because it makes sense to.
None of this is complicated or heroic. It's just the set of decisions you make when you care about what you're putting into the world, even when what you're putting into the world is, at its heart, a very nice candle.
Where we are now
Three Trees has grown steadily since those first kitchen table batches - new shapes, new scents, markets and stockists and orders that still feel genuinely exciting to pack up and send out. The studio is busier than it used to be. The range is wider. The wax pours are, we're pleased to report, significantly more reliable.
But the fundamentals haven't changed. Every candle is still made by hand. Every batch is still small. The three trees are still in the garden.
And every now and then, on a quiet evening with a candle burning and the eucalyptus doing its thing outside, it's hard not to feel like the whole thing was a good idea from the start.
